The origin
What happens to everything a person has learned when they are gone?
A person’s judgment develops through a lifetime of experiences, decisions, mistakes and changing beliefs. Photographs, messages and written decisions may survive, but the judgment behind them—how someone weighed a situation, recognized what mattered or arrived at a decision—usually does not.
We set out to carry that deeper understanding forward, so it could remain useful even after the person who developed it was gone.
The discovery
As we pursued the original question, we learned that preserving information and carrying forward understanding are different problems. The system needed to connect memory, changing circumstances, specialized reasoning, action and observation so what it understood could inform what it did next. That work led us to build an operating system around the model.
The model is one part of the system. The intelligence is what the whole system makes possible.
That became the foundation of our work in Persistent Intelligence.
The larger opportunity
What began as a question about one person applies wherever judgment and understanding develop over time. Investors build judgment through opportunities, investments, mistakes and outcomes; companies develop an understanding of their customers and relationships through experience. The value lies in more than the information collected—it lies in what has been learned from it. We believe that understanding should inform the next opportunity, conversation or decision.

These are the principles we build by.
01 Intelligence should accumulate.
What people and intelligent systems learn through experience should remain useful and inform what comes next.
02 The model is not the whole system.
Lasting intelligence requires an operating system that connects understanding, memory, reasoning, action and the ability to learn from what happens.
03 Different kinds of intelligence have different responsibilities.
Exploration and interpretation require different approaches from precise reasoning and decisions that must follow established facts.
04 Capability does not create authority.
Intelligence can become increasingly capable while people remain responsible for determining what it is allowed to do.
05 The future deserves ambition. The present demands evidence.
We build toward what we believe is possible while remaining precise about what has actually been demonstrated.
These principles determine the problems we pursue, the products we build and the standards to which we hold our work.
The commitment
